Most of us have been using body lotions for as long as we can remember. It’s become the go to moisturizing product for our body for quite some time. While some newer, healthier versions of lotions are coming out these days, unfortunately many of the lotions from well-known brands are still filled with many toxic ingredients, preservatives and synthetic fragrances. This is why we decided to create organic body oils that are not only moisturizing and non-toxic, but also provide nourishing, skin healing properties.

Some questions we are often asked are: “Are body oils better than lotions?” and “Are body oils as moisturizing as lotions?” Since our skin covers most of our body and nearly 60% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream we felt it was important to write a post about why body oils are a healthier and better option for your skin.

1. Body Oils Are Preservative & Synthetic Free

To make lotion, oil and water must be combined through the use of additives and emulsifiers. In order to keep bacteria from growing in water, preservatives like parabens or any other synthetics have to be added into the lotion so that it remains shelf stable. The beauty of body oil is that there is no water present in them so there is no need to add any synthetics to the formula to make it shelf stable. Our body oils do not contain any synthetic fragrances like most lotions do. They only contain organic essential oils, which add additional aromatherapeutic and skin healing benefits.

2. Body Oils Retain Moisture

Body oils mix well with other naturally occurring oils of the body like sebum on your skin, so they can penetrate more deeply into the skin and retain moisture under the surface. Body oils can most accurately match the natural sebum of your skin. Body oils, while good for all skin types, are actually encouraged for those with oily and acne-prone skin because they balance natural sebum production and your skin no longer has to overcompensate by producing excess oil, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

3. Deliver Nutrients, Vitamins & Anti-Oxidants into Skin

Body oils have bioactive properties, which allow for the ingredients in the oils to be more readily absorbed into your bloodstream after they are applied to your skin. Because the naturally occurring nutrients and vitamins found in many of these oils can be absorbed into the skin, they can help revitalize skin on a cellular level and create a more resilient moisture barrier. For example, sweet almond oil, which is the base ingredient for most of our body oils and fragrance oils, is very rich in vitamins A, B, D and E and also contains potassium, magnesium and calcium. It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and penetrates deep to make your skin feel softer. The 19 percent linoleic acid it contains protects skin from UV radiation, adds moisture and soothes skin. Lotions, on the other hand, typically just sit on the top of your skin until you wash them off.

4. Body Oils Can Naturally Repair Skin Damage

Unlike most lotions, which tend to sit on the surface of the skin, body oils have the ability to penetrate through the surface.  Ingredients found in our body oils like rosehips, vitamin E, calendula oil and sweet almond oil naturally heal, rejuvenate and restore skin and have been known to repair skin damage over time.

5. Protect Against Free Radicals & Environmental Pollutants

Because body oils are pure and don’t contain water or fillers, they are able to seal the good ingredients in, and keep the bad ones out! Free radicals like pollution, cigarette smoke, the sun, and pesticides, among others, can lead to premature aging and damage on the outer surface of the skin. When you switch to body oil, which protects skin starting from the inside out, outside stressors have a more difficult time doing damage to your body’s surface.
